Claudio Castro has served as mayor of Renca, a municipality in Santiago, since 2016. He was reelected in 2021 and again in 2024. In his third term, he is promoting a long-term vision for Renca, focused on the urban, social, economic, and environmental transformation of the community over the next 30 years. Castro’s professional career includes serving as social director for Latin America and the Caribbean at TECHO, a youth-led nonprofit organization that works in informal settlements to create a just society without poverty, where he worked to connect university students with marginalized communities such as informal settlements, favelas, and camps. He later held positions at the Silva Henríquez Catholic University and the University of Chile, where he led the Office of Equity and Inclusion, and worked at the Ministry of Education of Chile supporting public education reform.
