Electrical Engineer at NASA and Founder of Fundación Espacial Katya Echazarreta
Katya Echazarreta is an electrical engineer, science communicator, and founder and president of Fundación Espacial Katya Echazarreta, which supports individuals interested in pursuing space-industry careers. As a citizen astronaut, she became the first Mexican-born woman in space in June 2022, selected by Space for Humanity on a mission to analyze the “overview effect.” Echazarreta began her career at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and has worked on five NASA missions, including the Perseverance rover and Europa Clipper. She has hosted science shows, promotes STEM on social media and has been featured on magazine covers including Vogue, Glamour and Cosmopolitan. Currently pursuing her master’s in electrical engineering at Johns Hopkins University, Echazarreta received three honorary doctorates for her humanitarian and technological contributions.
