Piotr Cywinski is a doctor of humanities, a medieval historian, and, since 2006, has been Director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oswiecim, Poland. An active participant and frequent initiator in the Polish-Jewish and Christian-Jewish dialogue, Cywinski also is Co-founder and Chairman of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation and the board of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Institute, Chief Expert of the Center for Research on Economics of Memorial Sites (at SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw, Poland), Co-founder and Chairman of the Society for Management of the Memorial Sites; and member of the International Auschwitz Council. He is the author of numerous historical publications, mainly focused on medieval ages and issues connected with the Shoah and memorials.
